LED neon sign maintenance: acrylic, tubing and power

Switch off and unplug an LED neon sign before cleaning. Lift away loose dust with a soft brush, then gently clean the acrylic backing with a soft, lint-free cloth. Keep liquid away from the electrical parts and follow the care instructions supplied with your sign.

Identify the sign and its materials

These notes are for LED neon signs with acrylic backing. Traditional glass neon has a different construction and should be maintained according to its maker’s instructions. Printed artwork, coatings and adhesives may also need their own cleaning method.

Disconnect power and remove loose dust

Unplug the power supply and allow the sign to cool before touching it. Use a soft brush to lift dust from accessible surfaces. Support the backing and avoid pulling the tubing or cables.

Use only a clean, soft cloth on the acrylic. Check that it contains no grit, and apply light pressure to avoid scratching the surface.

Clean the acrylic gently

If the supplied care instructions permit it, use a cloth lightly dampened with water and a small amount of mild soap on the plain acrylic backing. Wipe gently and blot away moisture. Apply liquid to the cloth rather than spraying the assembled sign.

Keep the power supply, connectors, controller and cable openings dry. Do not immerse the sign or use a hose or pressure washer. Let surfaces dry fully before reconnecting power.

Avoid cleaners that can damage the finish

Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders, window-cleaning sprays and solvents such as acetone or alcohol unless the maker explicitly approves them for the exact material. Acrylic sheet manufacturers recommend gentle cleaning and warn that incompatible products can damage the surface.

Ask for care advice before treating stubborn marks, printed areas or adhesive residue. A method intended for a loose sheet of acrylic may not be suitable for an assembled illuminated sign.

Inspect the setup during routine care

Look for loose supports, damaged cables or moisture around electrical components. Leave a damaged sign unplugged and contact the supplier with photos and the order details. Follow the supplied instructions for storage and future use.
